1. Purpose and scope

PHIG owes a duty of care to everyone who works or travels for it. This policy sets the minimum standards for safety and security at work, in travel and in the field, including migrant-health and humanitarian settings. Applies to the Board, the Director, staff, consultants, volunteers, experts, partners and suppliers of PHIG and all platforms of its network.

2. Policy

  1. Risk assessment before any field activity, travel to a country or region with elevated risk, or event; measures proportionate to the risk; no activity proceeds where the risk is unacceptable.
  2. Travel approved by the Director; itinerary, contacts and emergency plan recorded; check-in procedures for high-risk locations; insurance (medical, evacuation) in place for international travel.
  3. Security briefings for persons deployed to humanitarian or refugee settings, including on PSEAH and safeguarding.
  4. Right to refuse unsafe work without penalty.
  5. Incidents reported under the Incident Reporting Policy; near misses included.
  6. Mental-health support and debriefing after distressing assignments.

3. Procedures

  1. Travel risk-assessment form; emergency contact list; annual review of insurance.

Every two years and when donor rules change.
